Ben Hogan - 2024 Judah Folkman Award Recipient
NAVBO announces with pleasure the selection of Benjamin Hogan, PhD, as the recipient of the 2024 Judah Folkman Award in Vascular Biology, which recognizes outstanding contributions from vascular biologists at mid-career. Dr. Hogan is currently Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Co-Head of the Program in Organogenesis and Cancer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. His research, taking great creative advantage of the zebrafish system, has significantly advanced our understanding of VEGF-C and VEGF-R3 as key regulators of lymphangiogenesis in development, cancer, and lymphatic disease. Dr. Hogan will present the Folkman Award Lecture and receive the award at Vascular Biology 2024 in Pacific Grove, California this October. Congratulations Ben!

Developmental Vascular Biology Workshop
|
Don’t Miss It! The NAVBO 20th Anniversary Virtual DVB Workshop is next week - register now! Register now and join us next week for a truly unique and important event!
It has been twenty years since the first NAVBO Developmental Vascular Biology (DVB) Workshop, a meeting that brought together many of the leaders of what was at the time a still-emerging and exciting new discipline. We have invited many of these leaders back to take stock of where we were then, what has happened in the twenty years since, where we are now, and the questions and challenges that lie ahead. The invited speakers will offer workshop participants
|
insightful perspectives on the history and evolution of their research topics over the last two decades. The invited speakers’ presentations will be complemented by shorter presentations from rising stars highlighting the latest cutting-edge research. Each session promises to be an immersive experience showcasing the remarkable strides made in this dynamic field.
The workshop program and list of speakers are available HERE
This workshop is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone currently studying or working in developmental vascular biology to learn about the origins of this exciting field. It will be perhaps especially useful for trainees, who in one short meeting will receive a highly informative overview of the history and twenty-year evolution of the developmental vascular biology field.
Don’t miss this important event - it is rare to have a chance to hear about the “journey of science” from so many of the key individuals who made it happen, all assembled together.

Jennifer S. Fang, Tulane University
Too often as junior scientists and trainees, we focus our attention forwards; towards the next step in our career progression, the next experiment to plan, the next grant to write, the next presentation to pull together. Thus, I value this opportunity to pause, take a breath, and look backwards to reflect on how far I have come in my scientific career.
I am an Assistant Professor at Tulane University’s Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Prior to starting my lab at Tulane two years ago, I completed two postdoctoral positions – with the second juggled alongside the equally daunting

challenges of the COVID shutdown and becoming a new parent. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned in my professional journey thus far.

Vascular Crosstalk Podcast
|
Dr. Lisandra Vila Ellis, MD is stepping down as the Host of Vascular Crosstalk. We would like to thank her for initiating this idea while serving on the NAVBO Education Committee and for successfully launching it in January 2023. Dr. Vila Ellis is now an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL and serves as the Co-Chair of NAVBO's Online Program Committee. Former Education Committee Chair, Kishore Wary, remarked, “Lisandra did a fantastic job with the production of Vascular Crosstalk; it is a timeless contribution to the Vascular Biology community.“
|
We wish her all the best in these new positions and owe her a debt of gratitude for creating such a wonderful addition to the NAVBO line up of online offerings.
Lisandra's last podcast will air this month with guest Robert Hegele from the Robarts Research Institute. Mitzy Cowdin, UT Southwestern, will take on the role of interviewer for Vascular Crosstalk with her first episode airing in the spring.

Presentation Skills Toolkit available from AAMC
Experts in undergraduate medical education affiliated with the American Association of Medical Colleges have made available resources for trainees in the health professions to help them gain effective command of presentation skills for classroom, conference, or clinic. Resources include strategies for developing and delivering formal lectures, poster and oral abstract chats, communication with patients, and more. Links are provided to a host of additional resources for developing and implementing solid presentation skills. Plenty of value here for the seasoned lecturer as well!

Cellular Heterogeneity of Activated Primary Human Macrophages and Associated Drug–Gene Networks: From Biology to Precision Therapeutics
Circulation
Interferon-γ (IFNγ) signaling plays a complex role in atherogenesis. IFNγ stimulation of macrophages permits in vitro exploration of proinflammatory mechanisms and the development of novel immune therapies. We hypothesized that the study of macrophage subpopulations could lead to anti-inflammatory interventions. Read More
Shear stress control of vascular leaks and atheromas through Tie2 activation by VE-PTP sequestration
EMBO Molecular Medicine
Vascular endothelial protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP) influences endothelial barrier function by regulating the activation of tyrosine kinase receptor Tie2. We determined whether this action is linked to the development of atherosclerosis by examining the influence of arterial shear stress on VE-PTP, Tie2 activation, plasma leakage, and atherogenesis. Heterogeneity of endothelial VE-PTP downstream polarization, Tie2 activation, junctional claudin-5, and permeability in the aorta and vena cava
Cell and Tissue Research
Endothelial cells of mammalian blood vessels have multiple levels of heterogeneity along the vascular tree and among different organs. Further heterogeneity results from blood flow turbulence and variations in shear stress. Read More

Imitation as the sincerest form of flattery? Not when it comes to grant applications
Mike Lauer describes in a recent NIH Extramural NEXUS a case study exemplifying how plagiarism in the grant application process is handled at the NIH and reinforcing the importance of peer review confidentiality. The anonymized exemplar case involved a peer reviewer who recognized, in a grant assigned to them for review, their own text and ideas from a grant they previously submitted. Investigations by NIH’s Office of Extramural Research and the “flattering” submitter’s institution uncovered research misconduct in a variety of forms. The consequences? Prohibition of the plagiarizer from serving on NIH committees or being PI on applications for three years. And for the plagiarizer’s colleague at another institution who passed along the previous submission, thus violating confidentiality? Termination of their employment.
Science & PINS Prize for early-career researchers in neuromodulation
The Science & PINS Prize, awarded for innovative research involving the modulation of neural activity through physical stimulation of targeted sites, is accepting applications from junior investigators (advanced degree received in the last 10 years and 45 years or younger as of 1/1/24). Application materials include a 1000-word essay describing work done by the applicant within the past 3 years and implications of the work for neuromodulation. Deadline for entry of applications for the $25,000 prize is March 15, 2024.
NIH workshop on marginalized identities, clinical care, and research impact
The NIDDK will offer a publicly-accessible workshop, “Understanding the Biological Mechanisms Underlying the Health Consequences of Racism, Marginalization, and Discrimination” on April 17-18, 2024, as an opportunity for patients, clinicians and researchers to better understand both the state of the science and the consequences of racism, marginalization, and discrimination on disease impact. A focus on interdisciplinarity will seek to foster an unimpeded exchange of ideas and shared learning, as well as to promote consideration of intersectionality across marginalized identities and the multidimensional research framework. The deadline for workshop registration is April 16, 2024.
