Top Ten Reads of 2024

The Top Ten Hit Parade for 2024 includes the announcements of the Benditt and Folkman Award Winners, the announcement of the IVBM Travel Award recipients, and sadly the passing of Dr. David Dichek; Member Publications by Athina Dritsoula, John Greenwood, Osama Harraz, Graeme Birdsey and Anna M Randi; Lessons Learned by Cristina Espinosa-Diez, Jennifer Fang and Ziqing Liu; and Lab of the Month features from Richard Pierce and Taija Mäkinen.

Announcement of Folkman and Benditt Awards Recipients

Ben Hogan -  2024 Judah Folkman Award Recipient

NAVBO announces with pleasure the selection of Benjamin Hogan, PhD, as the recipient of the 2024 Judah Folkman Award in Vascular Biology, which recognizes outstanding contributions from vascular biologists at mid-career. Dr. Hogan is currently Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Co-Head of the Program in Organogenesis and Cancer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. His research, taking great creative advantage of the zebrafish system, has significantly advanced our understanding of VEGF-C and VEGF-R3 as key regulators of lymphangiogenesis in development, cancer, and lymphatic disease. Dr. Hogan will present the Folkman Award Lecture and receive the award at Vascular Biology 2024 in Pacific Grove, California this October. Congratulations Ben!

Asrar Malik to receive 2024 Earl P. Benditt Award

NAVBO is pleased to announce the selection of Asrar B. Malik, PhD, as the 2024 recipient of the Earl P. Benditt Award, in recognition of his numerous contributions to our understanding of pulmonary vascular barrier function. Dr. Malik is the Schweppe Family Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology & Regenerative Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Over the decades,

work in Dr. Malik’s laboratory has helped delineate the molecular mechanisms that govern vascular permeability in

a variety of normal homeostatic contexts (such as hemostasis and adaptive angiogenesis) and pathologies (inflammation, sepsis, thrombosis, tumor angiogenesis). Dr. Malik will receive the award at Vascular Biology 2024 in Pacific Grove, California in October. Congratulations Asrar!

Please plan to attend Dr. Malik's Benditt Award Lecture on January 14 at 1:00pmET - register for this online event here.

For more information on both recipients, please visit our web site.

Remembering David Dichek

Very sad news, Dr. David Dichek, a NAVBO member since 1995 and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in the Division of Cardiology, died unexpectedly on March 2.  The NAVBO and UW communities mourn this loss.  Dr. Dichek was an active member throughout his tenure at NAVBO and he will be sorely missed.  Drs. Farid Moussavi-Harami, Daniel Yang, and Francis Kim composed an obituary that can be found here: https://cardiology.uw.edu/remembering-david-dichek

Endothelial Piezo1 channel mediates mechano-feedback control of brain blood flow

Nature Communications

Hyperemia in response to neural activity is essential for brain health. A hyperemic response delivers O2 and nutrients, clears metabolic waste, and concomitantly exposes cerebrovascular endothelial cells to hemodynamic forces. While neurovascular research has primarily centered on the front end of hyperemia—neuronal activity-to-vascular response—the mechanical consequences of hyperemia have gone largely unexplored. The disruptive role of LRG1 on the vasculature and perivascular microenvironment

Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

The establishment of new blood vessels, and their subsequent stabilization, is a critical process that facilitates tissue growth and organ development. Once established, vessels need to diversify to meet the specific needs of the local tissue and to maintain homeostasis. These processes are tightly regulated and fundamental to normal vessel and tissue function.  Read More

Lessons Learned

Cristina Espinosa-Diez, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Wayne State University

Lessons Learned June 2024

Cristina shares her insights about the importance of reaching out to junior and senior colleagues for support, creating a dream team and fostering open communication in the lab.  A comprehensive lab manual is also invaluable!

Jennifer Fang, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Tulane University

Lessons Learned February 2024

Jennifer urges researchers to reflect on "the big picture," in order to gain scientific and career perspectives.  When faced with obstacles, she stresses flexibility and  seeking  feedback from trusted mentors, friends and colleagues.

Ziqing Liu, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Medical College of Wisconsin

Lessons Learned December 2024

Ziqing poses insightful questions for junior faculty to consider in the areas of Lab Management, Grant Submission, and Job Satisfaction and advises post docs to learn as much as they can about finance and administration as they transition to running a lab.
