GEC Roundtable: Building a Fulfilling Academic Career Beyond the Big R1

GEC Roundtable: Building a Fulfilling Academic Career Beyond the Big R1

Wednesday, September 30, 2026 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Academia offers an array of rewarding career paths across many kinds of institutional environments. Hosted by NAVBO's Growth and Enrichment Committee, this discussion brings together vascular biologists who have found scholarly community, scientific impact, and professional fulfillment beyond the large R1 university. Our panel, Diane Darland, Ph.D. , Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor, University of North Dakota; Thanh Theresa Dinh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, San Jose State University; and Laura Pillay, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Western Washington University, will share candid perspectives on how institutional type and geographic context can shape research environment, mentorship culture, funding landscape, and day-to-day rhythms of academic life. Whether one is drawn to a smaller campus community, a specific region of the country, a stronger emphasis on teaching, or other priorities, this conversation will illuminate the distinctive opportunities and honest trade-offs that come with charting a path outside the traditional R1 institutions. By expanding the conversation about what a successful academic career looks like, the Growth and Enrichment Committee aims to empower NAVBO members to make intentional, informed decisions that align with both their scientific ambitions and their broader life goals.
