Description

The Florence R. Sabin Award recognizes a unique individual who embodies the spirit of Dr. Florence Sabin (1871-1953) who broke scientific barriers with her research in Lymphatic Biology and public health advocacy. In addition to her seminal contributions to science, Dr. Sabin's later work as a public health administrator left a permanent imprint upon the communities in which she served. Her advocacy work led to the creation of the Sabin Health Laws, which modernized public health in Colorado by providing more hospital beds to treat tuberculosis.

Since 2022, NAVBO has recognized outstanding scientists that have built upon Dr. Sabin’s remarkable legacy, not only through their scientific accomplishments, but also by creating opportunities for others, overcoming challenges with resilience, and helping shape a welcoming and supportive research environment.  We’ve brought together four past recipients: Dr. Omolola Eniola-Adefeso (UIC),  Dr. Naomi Chesler (UC Irvine),  Dr. Manu Platt (NIH), and Dr. Mahdi Garelnabi (UMass Lowell) for a roundtable intended to move beyond celebrating their achievements. 

We hope to provide an honest conversation about the realities of building a scientific career: the setbacks, difficult decisions, moments of self-doubt, lessons learned, and the people and experiences that helped shape their journeys. Our goal is for trainees and early-career investigators to leave inspired, encouraged, and equipped with practical advice for navigating their own careers while helping create opportunities for those who follow.
