Webinar Featuring Dr. Elliot Chaikof, MD, Ph.D.
Thursday, March 6, 2025 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EST)
Description
Please join as for our next webinar with Elliot L. Chaikof, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and the Johnson and Johnson Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. The title of his talk is "Addressing Challenges in Thrombosis and Bleeding: From Drug Discovery to Device Design."
Abstract: Cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, affecting nearly 20–30% of cancer patients and significantly impacting treatment outcomes. Despite current thromboprophylaxis strategies, conventional anticoagulants provide incomplete protection while posing a substantial bleeding risk. This presentation explores the evolving landscape of thrombosis research, highlighting promising strategies that dissociate thrombosis from hemostasis, mitigating bleeding risk. Novel insights into the molecular mechanisms of thromboinflammation, including P-selectin/PSGL-1 interactions, offer new therapeutic targets. The discussion also extends to innovative biomaterials and device-based solutions designed to modulate thrombogenicity in clinical settings. Through translational research and multidisciplinary approaches, we aim to advance safer and more effective strategies for preventing and treating thrombosis in high-risk populations.
