Vascular Biology Publication Alert - Editors Needed

Thank you, Dr. Stan!!!

The Vascular Biology Publications Alert (VBPA), first issued in 2007, still remains popular with NAVBO members.  This is due to the dedicated editors we have had since its inception.  One of those editors, Dr. Radu Stan, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, a Senior Editor, has been at the helm, keeping it on course since September 2010. He moved to that position after two years as an Editor, having started with the VBPA in July 2008.  Dr. Stan has decided after almost fifteen years of leading the VBPA to step down.  We want to thank him for his continued years of service and for the evolution and growth of the VBPA under his stewardship.

Dr. Monica Lee, University of Illinois Chicago, will step in as the new Senior Editor, joining the other VBPA Senior Editors, Juan Melero-Martin, Boston Children's Hospital, and Somanath Shenoy,  University of Georgia.

We would also like to like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Susana Cavallero, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, as she moves on to other endeavors,  for her years of service as an editor of the VBPA.  Thank you, Susana!

We are currently seeking new editors to join our editing teams for the VBPA.

How it works - The VBPA has 21 editors, three teams of seven, that share the work of selecting relevant papers from a predetermined list of journals.  Each team works every third month and works under one of our senior editors, Monica Lee, Somanath Shenoy, and Juan Melero-Martin. Established in 2007, this publication is still quite popular among our members and the work of the editors is very much appreciated.

If you are interested, let us know by completing this form by March 14, you’ll be asked to upload your CV.  Our senior editors will review the applicants and make their selection.

Differential expression of plasma proteins and pathway enrichments in pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis

Molecular Medicine

In children with type 1 diabetes (T1D), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) triggers a significant inflammatory response; however, the specific effector proteins and signaling pathways involved remain largely unexplored.  Read More

Putative biomarkers of hepatic dysfunction in critically ill sepsis patients

Clinical and Experimental Medicine

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the various types of end-organ damage associated with sepsis, hepatic injury is linked to significantly higher mortality rates compared to dysfunction in other organ systems. This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers of hepatic injury in sepsis patients through a multi-center, case-control approach. Read More

Metabolomic signature of pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis: key metabolites, pathways, and panels linked to clinical variables

Molecular Medicine

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of type 1 diabetes (T1D), arising from relative insulin deficiency and leading to hyperglycemia, ketonemia, and metabolic acidosis. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent severe outcomes. Read More

A reduced proteomic signature in critically ill Covid-19 patients determined with plasma antibody micro-array and machine learning

Clinical Proteomics

COVID-19 is a complex, multi-system disease with varying severity and symptoms. Identifying changes in critically ill COVID-19 patients' proteomes enables a better understanding of markers associated with susceptibility, symptoms, and treatment. We performed plasma antibody microarray and machine learning analyses to identify novel proteins of COVID-19. Read More

The plasma proteome differentiates the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) from children with SARS-CoV-2 negative sepsis

Molecular Medicine

The Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) can develop several weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection and requires a distinct treatment protocol. Distinguishing MIS-C from SARS-CoV-2 negative sepsis (SCNS) patients is important to quickly institute the correct therapies. Read More

Pediatric sepsis inflammatory blood biomarkers that correlate with clinical variables and severity of illness scores

Journal of Inflammation

Sepsis is a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response triggered by infection, resulting in organ dysfunction. A major challenge in clinical pediatrics is to identify sepsis early and then quickly intervene to reduce morbidity and mortality. Read More

Targeting EPHB2/ABL1 restores antitumor immunity in preclinical models of ependymoma

PNAS

Ependymoma (EPN), a common form of brain cancer in children, remains challenging. Surgical resection and radiation therapy are the standard treatments for EPN. In this study, the team used a mouse model of EPN in immunocompetent mice, where they discovered that dasatinib (Sprycel), an approved drug for leukemia, potently inhibited the growth of a molecular subgroup EPN and works in part by activating the anti-tumor immune responses.  All eyes on the fate of NIH Indirect Cost rates

Issuance of NOT-OD-25-068 by the NIH, in response to directives from the White House to markedly reduce allowable rates for Facilities & Administrative costs paid to grantee institutions, has precipitated deep concern for the future of biomedical research in the US. As of this writing, court actions on behalf of the scientific enterprise have delayed implementation of the Indirect rate cut, but the prospect of profound resource loss has injected uncertainty into every aspect of research, from facility maintenance to student recruitment to faculty hiring and professional development.

Immunity, Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Cardiometabolic Health

Editors: Masanori Aikawa, Jürgen Bernhagen, Gabrielle Fredman, Carlos Labarrere, and Holger Winkels

NAVBO is sponsoring this Research Topic through our partnership with Frontiers In Cardiovascular Medicine.

Accumulating evidence has established that atherosclerotic vascular diseases are immune-mediated conditions. More specifically, the condition’s pathophysiological progression involves the activation of both innate and adaptive immune systems and the consequential inflammatory responses.

Led by an interdisciplinary team of topic experts, this Research Topic will delve into the role of inflammation as a key mechanism in atherosclerotic vascular diseases. A specific focus is placed on how various inflammatory mediators contribute to atherosclerotic lesion formation, propagation, and plaque instability. Specific areas of interest are listed on the web page.  https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/65457/immunity-atherosclerosis-and-cardiovascular-disease-an-interdisciplinary-approach-to-cardiometabolic-health

The deadline for manuscripts is February 27, 2025.

The collection focuses on phenotypic transitioning of vascular and immune cells, such as endothelial-to-mesenchymal transitions with specific emphasis on the role of immune and inflammatory responses in vascular remodeling, genetic and epigenetic factors, environmental and lifestyle factors, personalized medicine approaches and the interplay between biomechanical forces and endothelial health in vascular remodeling. Editors: Drs. Laena Pernomian (University of South Carolina) and Vanessa de Fátima Borges (Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles). Submission deadline: March 12, 2025.

https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/63245

cThe collection examines the interplay between perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and vascular endothelium, particularly in the context of energy imbalance, PVAT's secretome and mechanical properties. The potential of PVAT as a therapeutic target and/or a source of diagnostic biomarkers for cardiovascular diseases are also of particular interest. Editors: Drs. Eduardo Nava (University of Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain), Maria Andreia Delbin (State University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil), Ning Xia (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Mainz, Germany) and Stephanie Watts (Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA). Submission deadline: May 30, 2025. https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/65161
