Empowering Neurodiverse Scientists: Strategies for Effective Mentorship and Support

Empowering Neurodiverse Scientists: Strategies for Effective Mentorship and Support

Tuesday, April 8, 2025 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Neurodiversity refers to the natural differences in human cognition and brain function, including conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological variations. Embracing neurodiversity in the scientific community means recognizing and valuing these differences as part of human diversity, rather than viewing them as deficits. Recognizing and understanding these differences is important in the scientific community as we aim to create environments that support the success of all individuals. This panel discussion will explore effective strategies for mentoring neurodiverse scientists with various cognitive profiles. The panel will feature experts who are passionate neurodiversity advocates. Dr. Krista Aguilera, Postdoctoral Fellow, Cornell University and Dr. Rebecca San Martin, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Cell Biology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. They will share practical advice on mentorship approaches to support individuals with different cognitive needs. The discussion will cover topics such as adapting communication styles, recognizing individual strengths, and building a culture that fosters success. Panelists will also highlight best practices for offering flexible accommodations, overcoming challenges, and creating mentorship frameworks that empower scientists to thrive in their careers. This session is designed for mentors, institutional leaders, and neurodiverse scientists themselves, offering valuable strategies for creating an environment that enables everyone to succeed. This event will be moderated by Skylar King, Senior Scientist, Washington University School of Medicine.
