Building a career in academic science is very gratifying, combining the excitement for research & discovery together with the passion for teaching which can shape future generations of scientists. Understanding the typical academic path in the US, the different types of academic jobs and career trajectories is important to plan effective strategies to secure a successful career. This roundtable discussion will share personal experiences and explore practical strategies on how to accomplish an effective training, building a strong network, improving negotiation skills, and developing mentoring readiness – while balancing with personal life. The panel will feature experts at different career stages and include Dr. Mabruka Aifadi, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dr. Elena Aikawa, PhD, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Catherine Tcheandieu, DVM, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of California San Francisco. The panelists will discuss topics such as how to balance the pros and cons of a career in academia, and will share rewarding experiences, and best practices for overcoming challenges for a personal perspective and the one of mentees. They will also highlight how to build a culture that fosters success and how to create mentorship frameworks that empower scientists to thrive in their careers in the US. This session is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral fellow, young faculty, and institutional leaders, offering valuable strategies for creating an environment that enables everyone to succeed. This event will be moderated by Elisa Boscolo, Associate Professor, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and a member of NAVBO's Growth and Enrichment Committee.
